10 childhood reads that are still magical to S'poreans

Maybe we're overdue for a re-read?

As we look up occasionally from our smartphones to scoff at the iPad-toting generation, we might even take a second or two to reminisce the days when we read voraciously.

And because adulthood has made cynics of us all, it's nice to look back at the books that have enchanted our young and guileless minds.

1) Ladybird books

Our first forays into reading consist of well-loved tales like Three Little Pigs, The Emperor's New Clothes, and The Ugly Duckling.

 

2) Sweet Valley High

Many of us have done this: browsing the entire collection in the library, and being only able to choose a few to bring home.

 

3) Bookworm Short Stories

Sam Seng, Smarty, Mimi, and the rest were like part of our childhood gang.

 

4) Enid Blyton

Besides the usual hardcover series, extra magical books include The Wishing-Chair and The Faraway Tree series.

 

5) R.L Stine's Goosebumps

The Goosebumps series were a staple for the horror fans.

 

6) Roald Dahl

Dahl was a prolific writer who had many favourites to his name - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, etc. For those who are interested, he has also written autobiographies and adult short stories.

 

7) Comics our parents said were too expensive to buy

Archie, Asterisk and Obelisk, and Tintin were widely read, despite adult assertions that comics were "bad" reading material.

 

8) The Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew

9) Nintendo adventure books
