National water agency PUB said it received reports on the sighting of a creature resembling a crocodile in the Marina Reservoir waters near Sports Hub on Saturday, Nov. 26.

This led to the suspension of water sports activities in the area the whole weekend.

The agency added it is investigating and patrolling the waters in search of the creature.

However, in a statement on Sunday, a PUB spokesperson said the creature was most likely a monitor lizard:

“We have also contacted researchers from the National University of Singapore to identify the creature. Preliminary findings indicate that it is likely to be a monitor lizard.”

Groups that suspended activities this weekend as a precaution include the Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA) and the People's Association.

The SDBA said in a Facebook post it would cease all dragon boat activities in Marina Reservoir “indefinitely and until further notice”.

The public can report sightings with photos and/ or videos and its location by calling PUB at 1800-2255-782.

The PUB added that activities in the area can continue but people “should exercise caution and not to immerse in the waters”.
