Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-ocha said in a televised address to the nation on Oct. 13 that the country would hold a one-year mourning period and that all entertainment functions must be "toned down" for a month.

This is following the official announcement of the death of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

A palace statement said, "His majesty has passed away at Siriraj Hospital peacefully," adding he had died at 3.52pm.

The official period of mourning of one year will start from Oct. 14, 2016.

Foreigners in Thailand have been advised to respect the feelings and sensitivities of the Thai people at this time and behave respectfully when in public areas.

Access to entertainment, including restaurants, bars and shopping areas may be restricted.

If possible, the public is advised to wear sombre and respectful clothing and also check local media regularly and follow the advice of the local authorities.

The 88-year-old king was widely revered but had been in poor health the last few years, making few public appearances.

Seen as a stabilising figure, he presided from his throne through the numerous cycles of political turmoil and multiple coups in the country, including 20 constitutions.

He is thought by many Thais to be semi-divine.

The body of the king would be moved to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok on Friday.

The king's death comes as Thailand remains under military rule following a coup in 2014.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, 63, will take over the throne.

But he is much less well-known to Thais and has not attained his father's widespread popularity, having spent much of his time overseas, especially in Germany.
