Insurance company Prudential has released the results of the inaugural edition of the Prudential Relationship Index, the first of its kind in Asia.

The index is supposed to track how satisfied people are with their primary relationships such as those with partners, children, family and friends. It was developed to understand the state of personal relationships in Asia.

Not the best in Asia

So how are Singaporean relationships like compared to our Asian counterparts?

Unfortunately, Singapore is seventh out of 10 when it comes to relationship fulfillment with a score of 68/100 -- this score takes into account all relationships, not only spousal.

The relationship score that people in Singapore have for their partners is 63/100. This means partners fulfill 63 percent of what is believed to be important in a good relationship.

What are some aspects of a good relationship with a partner? Being easy to get along with (77 percent), doing things that both enjoy (75 percent), respecting individuality (70 percent), being honest (66 percent), and enjoying the sound of companionable silence (62 percent).

Pain points of a relationship

Perhaps indicative of the 63/100 score, the index also revealed that in any given week, 24 percent of married people in Singapore surveyed think seriously about leaving their spouse. Some 34 percent often argue with their partners, including 20 percent who say these arguments lead to verbal abuse.

And the root cause of arguments? Children (46 percent), money (41 percent) and housework (29 percent).

Interestingly, Singaporean parents are the most likely parents in Asia to get angry at their children and housework was the supposed reason. The findings found that 67 percent of parents in Singapore

tidy up after their children at least once a week, with 33 percent doing so every day. Even if the children are above 18, the figure remains at 31 percent.

The index surveyed 5,000 respondents in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam between July 13 and 31, 2016, and among adults 25 to 55.

In Singapore, 500 respondents took part.
