Singapore's population has hit 5.61 million in June 2016.
The statistics was released on Sept. 27 by the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) in its annual Population in Brief report.
At a glance, here is a breakdown of the key figures:
Number of citizens: 3.41 million
Through births and immigration, the number of citizens rose by 1 percent.
The report said the government takes a “calibrated approach to immigration”. There are plans to continue taking in between 15,000 and 25,000 new citizens each year to prevent the citizen population from shrinking.
Number of permanent residents (PRs): 520,000
This has remained constant as there were 530,000 PRs in June 2015.
Number of non-residents: 1.67 million
This group is made up of students, foreigners working in Singapore and their families. It grew by 2.5 percent.
Number of new citizens: 20,815 new citizens last year
This has remained largely unchanged from the previous three years.
Their age group:
Aged 20 and below: 38.9 percent
Aged 21 and 30: 13.4 percent
Aged 31 and 40: 27.1 percent
Aged above 40: 20.5 percent
Region where new citizens are from:
58.7 percent of new citizens from other Southeast Asian countries
35 percent were from other parts of Asia
6.3 percent from other countries outside of Asia
No breakdown of specific countries given.
