Oh no, Joseph Schooling.

The 21-year-old did not qualify for the Olympic Men's 100m freestyle finals after clocking 48.70 secs in his semi-final swim on Wednesday morning (Singapore time).

In fact, he finished last out of the 16 swimmers who made it through the heats.

Here are the timings of the final 8 swimmers, for comparison:

It was a very tough competition indeed — host country Brazil's Marcelo Chierighini snuck into the final by a whisker, but clocked a timing that was still 0.04s faster than Schooling's morning swim.

Better showing in heats

On Tuesday night, Singapore's enduring Olympic medal hope gave Singaporeans a National Day present with a new national record in the 100m freestyle event.

Schooling swam an impressive 48.27 sec, shaving 0.31 secs off his own personal best and national record at last year's SEA Games in Singapore.

He finished 6th overall out of the 16 swimmers in the semi-finals and ahead of 2012 London Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian.

One more event to go

But fret not, Singaporeans — the 100m freestyle is not Schooling's pet event.

Let's cheer our young titan on as he prepares for battle against the likes of Michael Phelps in the men's 100m butterfly on Friday.
