A new bus stop located along Jurong Gateway Road at Jurong East Central opposite Ivory Heights is giving away free WiFi for all and sundry.
The bus stop's existence was made known to Mothership.sg by a reader.
A check with the joint press release issued by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, Land Transport Authority, National Parks Board and Urban Redevelopment Authority on Thursday (Aug 18), confirmed that the bus stop's existence is real.
Named Project Bus Stop, this is an experimental prototype that will be in operation for a year from Aug. 18, 2016.
Besides free WiFi, the bus stop also comes equipped with handphone charging points, interactive smart boards that provide content and bus arrival timings, e-books download, journey planner, a green roof, bicycle parking, artwork and even a swing.
The public is encouraged to share their experience of using the bus stop with the authorities, as such futuristic bus stops could be implemented elsewhere.
Here is the public transport commuters' hierarchy of needs, because, trust me, I like to take public transport because cars are for rich people.
What commuters really want:
1. Bus schedule that is actually real-time and the screen will not go fuzzy
2. Free Wifi 24/7 up to 300-metre radius
3. Two dozen charging points for handphones
4. Ample bicycle parking
5. Charging points for electric rides
What commuters don't really want:
a. e-books
b. Journey planner
c. Swing
d. Artwork
Optional:
- Green roof
