On Monday, July 25, 2016, the Singapore police said in a news release that a 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly tricking women he met through an online dating mobile application into giving him money.
Between March and May, several police reports were made by women who were cheated of their money.
The police said the suspect sent messages to the women saying that he was involved in a vehicle accident and needed money to settle the matter privately with the other party.
He had also told some other women that he was an interior designer and needed money for a "work project".
The suspect would later keep giving excuses to avoid repayment after the money was transferred.
Mothership.sg has since received screenshots of multiple WhatsApp chat histories between a woman and an alleged scammer, whose modus operandi appears to be exactly what was reported.
The WhatsApp conversations took place over July 17 and 18 this year, a week before the police announced they had apprehended the suspect.
Here are the screenshots:
This is the alleged scammer's profile stating that he is a person of faith:
Really makes you want to trust him, huh?
1. So, here's how it starts: The alleged scammer would say he was texting while driving and got into an accident.
This will make the potential victim feel guilty.
2. Then he will claim to be negotiating payment to settle the matter privately with the other driver.
Very convincing, huh?
3. He then claims his father just had a heart surgery so he doesn't want to get his parent's help.
Not bad. Pretty smooth.
4. He even managed to find a photo of a car.
Points for effort.
5. And he can even say what's the other party's car model.
Judging by the damage, $5k seems too little though.
6. Now, here's when he starts to ask for money and making promises to return in full with interest.
Quite apologetic. And regretful. Not bad.
7. Then he starts to get impatient.
Too bad though, because the lady is not biting.
8. And then he got desperate and persistent.
But it is not working this time.
The woman who sent the screenshots said she did not send him any money eventually.
