The Workers' Party (WP) has expressed its concern on the manner which the investigations into the alleged violations of Cooling Off Day regulations were being conducted.

This was after witnesses shared video footage of several police officers conducting the search and seizure process of lawyer and former Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Teo Soh Lung's laptop and other electronic devices at her home.

Last Friday afternoon (May 27), the Elections Department (ELD) announced that they have reported three parties to the police for allegedly violating cooling-off day restrictions during the recent Bukit Batok by-election.

They included socio-political site The Independent Singapore, former Singapore Democratic Party candidate and former Internal Security Act detainee Teo Soh Lung, as well as blogger Roy Ngerng:

WP "urge the authorities to ensure that consistency and proportionality are applied to all investigations, as these are key to maintaining confidence in Singapore’s law enforcement organisations and legal system."

Below is the full statement by the Workers' Party (WP)

"The Workers’ Party is concerned about the manner in which the current investigations into alleged violations of “Cooling Off Day” regulations are reportedly being conducted.

We understand from the public record that other individuals or entities who were reported for similar violations in the past were not known to have faced the same lengthy interviews, and searches and seizures of personal equipment.

We urge the authorities to ensure that consistency and proportionality are applied to all investigations, as these are key to maintaining confidence in Singapore’s law enforcement organisations and legal system."

WP is not the first opposition party to express concern on issues related to the Cooling Off day rules.

On May 28, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) called on the ELD to be fair in its implementation of the cooling-off day rules, noting that the People's Action Party (PAP) politicians had previously violated the Cooling Off Day rules.
