USA failed to build a sturdy enough wall to keep out foreign intrusion.
This resulted in Lionel Messi scoring a sublime second goal from a free-kick, and in the process, breaking Argentina’s national-team record for goals scored on Tuesday, June 21, 2016.
Messi’s 55th international goal came in the Copa América semi-final match against the United States, courtesy of a free-kick.
He tied Gabriel Batistuta’s previous record of 54 last week against Venezuela.
Messi scored the record-breaker in the 31st minute.
He put the ball over the USA wall and buried it in the top-right corner of the goal.
It gave Argentina a 2-0 lead at the time, eventually winning 4-0 to secure their place in the Copa America final for a second straight time.
