Smell a rat?

A video of a rat holed up in the bread shelves of the Kang Kar Mall NTUC FairPrice has been shared widely on Facebook since May 30.

The video prompted the National Environment Agency (NEA) to conduct an inspection of the premises.

According to The Straits Times, NEA said that it found five burrows in the "external area under Hougang Mall management and would be taking enforcement against the mall and supermarket operator."

In case you missed it, here's the video by user Facebook user 孙雨明 (Sun Yv Ming):

He has since made his profile private (as of June 3, 1pm). Here's a screenshot of the Facebook post which contained the video where Sun alleged that no action was taken after he complained about the rat:

NTUC FairPrice has since posted an update regarding the rat situation. They also clarified that Sun was actually a bread delivery person who allegedly shortchanged NTUC FairPrice of their bread:

In case you can't access the post here is what NTUC Fairprice said:

Dear Customers,

We understand that Mr 孙雨明 (Sun Yu Ming) has since posted various comments on his Facebook page that suggests we have been negligent in managing the pest incident at our Kang Kar store. We have since identified Mr Sun as the delivery person for bread at our Kang Kar store, whom had been reported in the past for several occasions where he had short-changed the store by delivering less that what the store had ordered. The video he had posted was taken while he was replenishing stocks. Notwithstanding, we assure our customers that we continue to take proactive preventive measures to address the pest incident. Our investigations also show that the source of the pest did not originate from within store.

We are puzzled as to why Mr Sun would feel that we are not taking the necessary action and preventive measures to address this matter considering the various efforts we have since taken and continue to take.

We understand that he has continued to make inflammatory remarks, which questions our integrity, with the intention to mislead in his latest post. Should he persist in making such remarks, we will take necessary actions to protect our reputation.

Comments on the post have largely called questioned why NTUC FairPrice detailed Sun's dealings with NTUC FairPrice:

But of course, there were some who stood in defense of the supermarket chain:

This is not the first time the NTUC FairPrice at Kang Kar mall has received a complaint about rats.

It got one in February this year too:

In the ST report, a spokesperson for NTUC said that the rat in the video was caught and all products compromised by rats were disposed. The area has been sanitised as well. The spokesperson said pest control was also at the store five times last month.
