The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated a travel notice for Thailand on June 7, 2016.

Travel notices are routinely updated to remind Singaporeans of situations in countries with hot spots of unrest, such as Syria, Kuwait, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and on precautions one can take, such as purchasing travel insurance and knowing where the Singapore embassy is located.

The update to the travel notice is in light of the fact that many Singaporeans are travelling to Bangkok, Thailand during this June school holiday season and Thailand is still experiencing a heightened security situation one year after major incidents occurred where improvised explosive devices and bombs went off.

Travel Notice for Thailand [Updated: 7 June 2016]

There were a number of incidents in Thailand in 2015. On 1 February 2015, two small improvised explosive devices exploded at the Siam station of Bangkok’s Skytrain System, in close proximity to Siam Paragon shopping mall. On 7 March 2015, a grenade exploded outside the Bangkok Criminal Court in Chatuchak district. On 10 April 2015, a car bomb exploded in the basement car park of Central Festival shopping mall in Koh Samui in Surat Thani province. On 17 August 2015, a bomb exploded at the Erawan Shrine near Ratchaprasong intersection and Central World Shopping Centre in Bangkok, which killed several people and injured numerous others. Another bomb exploded at Sathorn Pier, next to Taksin BTS station, on 18 August 2015.

Singaporeans travelling to or residing in Thailand should exercise vigilance. They should keep themselves updated on the latest developments through Thai news outlets and heed the instructions of the local Thai authorities. Singaporeans are also advised to take all necessary precautions to ensure their personal safety, including purchasing comprehensive travel insurance and be familiar with the terms and coverage of the insurance policies.
