For the uninitiated, the Big 12 Conference is ten-school collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas.

In simple English, it is a 10-university sports meet held in Texas which includes universities like the University of Kansas, Iowa State University, and the University of Texas at Austin (which Joseph Schooling represents).

In February 2016 during the swimming competition among the Big 12, Schooling set NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), Big 12 and Texas records in both the 100 and 200m butterfly events.

He also "played an integral part in the 800 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay, all which captured national titles, setting NCAA, Big 12 and school records in the process," according to the official Big 12 Conference website.

Schooling was the only Singaporean among the Big 12 post-season award winners.

In addition to being the Big 12 Conference's Swimmer of the Year, Schooling was also named 2016 CSCAA (Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America) NCAA Division 1 Men’s Swimmer of the Year.
