10 things Singapore should do to stop the haze before blaming Indonesia

Make sure to do all 10, if not it won't work

Over the weekend, Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar, sat down and discussed environmental concerns with environmental website, Foresthints.news.

According to the website, she insisted that Indonesia had fulfilled their role in preventing the haze, and instead of commenting too much on Indonesia, Singapore and its government should "focus on its own role".

The statement was seen by some as a response to earlier statements by Singaporean Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkilfli. Which is odd, considering the statements were uniformly positive statements on the Jokowi administration.

Although most of the reactions to her statement has been relatively negative, we totally agree with the environment and forestry minister on this issue. There are indeed many things that Singapore can, and should do to stop forest fires that will ultimately lead to haze pollution.

Unfortunately, while Mrs Siti Nurbaya was forthcoming in discussing the measures that Indonesia had taken to combat the forest fires "We have been consistent in sticking to our part of the bargain, especially by attempting to prevent the recurrence of land and forest fires and by consistently enforcing the law." she didn't specify exactly what Singapore's role was in preventing forest fires.

So for the sake of fairness and clarity, we've come up with 10 things Singapore should do to stop forest fires that will ultimately lead to haze pollution.

10 things Singapore should do to stop forest fires that will ultimately lead to haze pollution

1. Don't start forest fires that will ultimately lead to haze pollution

2-10. Make sure we do number one.

Thank you, Mrs Siti Nurbaya Bakar for this timely reminder of Singapore's role in the fight against haze.
