Who: Changi Airport (51% stake) and CapitaMalls Asia (49% stake) will jointly develop Project Jewel at Changi Airport.

What: Project Jewel, with its distinctive dome-shaped facade made of glass and steel, will cost $1.47 billion. It will be built in front of Terminal 1.

Project Jewel will have five storeys above ground, and five basement storeys of retail and car park spaces. Nearly 70 per cent will be retail space. Among the attractions include a large-scale indoor garden with a 40-metre-high waterfall.

Why: The Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group said: “Project Jewel is a significant game-changing project for CAG in our journey to strengthen Changi Airport’s status as a major global air hub.  In today’s highly competitive landscape where airports around the world are actively competing for passengers’ mindshare, we cannot stop innovating.  Project Jewel will give us this additional edge.”

When: Construction will start in the second half of 2014. The project was first mentioned during Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's National Day Rally this year.

How: The building will be designed by architect Moshe Safdie. He also designed the Marina Bay Sands.
