Girl, 10, makes homemade chilli sauce to raise more than S$5,000 for cancer-stricken hawker

An amazing and kind-hearted feat.

In early July 2017, it was reported that Armenian Street Char Kway Teow hawker Tan Boon Teck is offering to teach anyone how to fry his signature dish for S$10,000.

This is not because he is retiring, but because he needs the money to pay off his medical bills as he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Moved by his plight, a little girl has stepped up to help him.

A 10-year-old girl, Phoebe Lim, who has been cooking since she was 5, is selling her homemade chilli sauce in a bid to raise funds for the cancer-stricken Tan.

Tan, 49, is the youngest son of the original owner of the Armenian Street Char Kway Teow hawker stall, the late Tan Chong Chia.

And this isn't child's play, in case you thought so.

She cooks the sauce like a real champ, and you can check out her pretty legit cooking skills in the video below:

The talented girl was also assisted by helpful and kind-hearted chefs who have stepped up to help her with the making of the chilli.

This includes Chef Benny Se Teo from Eighteen Chefs, who taught her the recipe, Wayne Liew from KEK Seafood who lent his kitchen for the homeschooler to cook the chilli, and who is also sponsoring the bottles and other materials.

Other young and enthusiastic chefs, like Melvin Chew from Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap, Boon Kai Chun from Good Chance Popiah Eating House and Douglas Ng from Fishball Story have also chipped in to help with the production of the chilli sauce.

Each bottle is sold for S$15 and comes in a labelled bottle:

Want to stock up on the sauce? Well, it might be too late as they've already reached their target having sold more than 300 bottles as orders were filled up in four days, and will stop producing the sauce after the accepted orders have been completed, as seen in their update:

??????? UPDATE: 25/07/2017 4:20PM ???????

Dear Uncles, Aunties, Kor Kors and Jie Jies. We have reached our 500 bottles target. We will stop taking orders now. For those who have ordered and paid, we will do another post after we have finished making the chilli. Thank you so much for helping Uncle Tan!

While it's a pity for some who might have wanted to get some homemade chilli sauce, it's never bad news if they've achieved their original goal, which was to raise funds. More than S$5,000 has been raised.

You can also support hawker Tan via the Open Stoves fundraiser, which sees hawkers and chefs who are part of eating place Timbre+ pairing up to sell a collaborative dish.

Hawkers and chefs can decide and pledge the amount they want to donate.

Alternatively, you can also visit the GiveASIA page which was created by Cindy Tan, Tan's niece who is the daughter of the oldest son.

Meanwhile, we're pretty sure Lim has a bright future ahead of her, putting her talents for the good of those in her community.
