A tweet by Twitter user Itsbobbih, about Singapore waters, recently went incredibly viral.

Here it is.

Here are the two articles that has cast a metaphorical "Do not swim" sign over Singapore waters.

Wow, this must have had made headlines all over our intensely conservative, typically non penis-eating society.

Nope.

There is no article in The Straits Times, or any other Singaporean news sites detailing these privates-destroying incidents.

In fact, here are the only two articles reporting on it.

Focus Times and Sunday Register.

There are no other links to any corroborating source for either the penis-biting fish, or the vagina-pinching crab.

A rough guide to distinguishing fake news, apart from common sense, is that these sites tend to provide no links throughout the article, only to end with a related article link to an out of this world news story about Singapore.

Scared

Despite the somewhat obvious fake nature of the news, many fell for it, with nearly 9,000 people retweeting it.

With many comments of this nature, from non-Singaporeans accompanying the tweet.

Yay, less tourists.
