Classy.

One of the residents' committees in Fengshan constituency hung out door hangers at housing block flats calling for volunteers.

A snapshot of the flyer was posted online by Workers' Party (WP) member Gerald Giam, who called attention to it:

The former Non-constituency MP had spotted the flyer on Thursday, March 16, while doing house visits in the area.

The flyers mentioned the eligibility criteria and also highlighted some of the perks volunteers can get, such as car parking privileges and priority registration in primary schools for their children.

It also contained a conspicuous grammar mistake, asking, "Who is eligibility to be Residents' Committee Volunteer?"

WP responds

In response, the WP followed up with an online advertisement of its own, "Who is eligibility to be residents' committee volunteer?", designed to resemble the flyer.

It called for volunteers and listed the benefits, but noted that the WP does not offer the same advantages.

The ad said: "We do offer: occasional free meals (leftover from events), free exercise from carrying chairs and tables, eternal love and gratitude".

People's Association responds

In a Facebook post on Friday night, March 17, the People's Association (PA), acknowledged the situation and responded:

PA wrote: "There have been some posts questioning the motivations of grassroots volunteers."

It acknowledged the efforts of volunteers and said many contribute but did "not expecting anything in return".

The PA post drew mixed responses.

This was so as the PA flyer could be seen as also "questioning the motivations of grassroots volunteers".

Because it was actually PA ([email protected]) that used more than half of its flyer space to explain and publicise the tangible benefits of being a volunteer, rather than focusing on the intangible rewards of being one.
