Minister tries to make point about education using road sweeper comic, not the best idea

Just don't point at people.

Ng Chee Meng is the Minister for Education (Schools).

So it was perhaps no surprise that he shared an education-related comic on his Facebook page.

Here is his caption.

Our values guide us. Saw this online recently and it struck a chord with me. Many of us have heard or even said the same words: “study hard or else you’ll be a cleaner next time.”

While it is important to urge our children to study hard and realise their potential, it is ultimately our character that defines us. How would we treat others and do our part for society, regardless of our ‘successes’?

Let’s work together and take every opportunity to inculcate the right values in our kids

And that caption was harmless enough, even quaint, considering it was from the Minister of Education.

The comic though, was a tad more controversial.

Here it is.

Just a bit of context, the comic has been widely circulated for a while now, but the first website coverage appeared to be by a website called NextShark.

People took offence with the picture.

Some felt it sent the wrong message to kids.

Because of the behaviour towards the sweeper.

Others came up with what they felt was a better message.

And perhaps the most important point of contention was in the treatment or perception of people, regardless of what jobs they were in.

A majority of the dissenters felt that it was just bad etiquette to point at strangers while one judges and comments behind their backs.

Which is understandable, so we've created a comic that we feel highlights the more pertinent point.
