The incident and initial complaint that the police did not treat an alleged sexual assault case with gravity and sensitivity was recounted on Facebook by Amanda Lai on Feb. 8.

Lai's post related how two of her friends were harassed and one of them was subsequently molested at the conclusion of her company’s Chinese New Year dinner held at Mouth Restaurant at Cross Street.

Lai said two of her colleagues were returning to the restaurant after using the restroom but were stopped by two men, one of whom allegedly asked one of the woman to take off her shirt to show him her breasts.

The man then apparently lifted the woman off the floor and molested her when she refused to give in to his demands and he only stopped when the woman's colleague started screaming.

The next day, the victim made a police report but was apparently told by the officer at the start of the interview, “Are you sure you want to do this? If this goes to court, you’ll need to testify ...”

Lai also said the officer told her friend, “Are you sure they weren’t just trying to be friendly? You know, ang moh culture is different from ours.”

In the police's Facebook post, they said a 37-year-old man has been arrested for outrage of modesty in relation to the case and he is currently assisting with investigations.
