The Toto Hongbao Draw 2017 will take place on Feb. 10 and the grand prize is a whopping S$12 million dollars.

Sounds great, isn't it? Well, here are the statistics that will help you let reality sink in a bit.

Rules of the game

For the uninitiated, Toto works like this.

An ordinary bet costs S$1 and you can select six numbers between 1 and 49.

The prizes are split into seven groups, depending on how many of the winning numbers you've matched.

You can also bet through buying a "system", which give you more chances, for a higher price.

System 7, is where you chose seven numbers instead, and your entry is worth seven ordinary bets, for S$7.

System 10, would then be 10 numbers, and you have the equivalent of 210 entries -- costing you S$210.

System 12 is the most expensive, with 12 numbers and costing a whopping S$924.

The odds

According to the Interactive Mathematics website, System 12 would give you the best chance at winning.

The probability of an ordinary S$1 bet winning the jackpot 1 in 13,983,816 chance.

Logically, System 12 will then give you the best chance of winning a prize, as it is a 1 in 15,134 chance. That's exactly 924 times the chances of winning with an ordinary ticket.

Before you rush to spend S$924, however, there are more factors that will affect your results:

Firstly, numbers will not confirm plus chop appear just because they haven't appeared before, as they're all drawn randomly by a machine.

Secondly, buying more will help increase your chance of winning, but you'll also increase your chances of making a very heavy loss. You're more likely to burn a hole in your pocket instead.

So remember, the house always wins.

Then again, there's always someone who's convinced they have to win the jackpot no matter what, right?
