Singtel offers double, triple mobile data for existing subscribers days after 4th telco announced

Lock down the existing subscribers to avoid losing market share.

With change comes the seasons. And with the seasons come winter fashion, where people can wear layered clothing once in a while to make a sartorial statement, which explains why Singaporeans enjoy holidaying in countries with temperate climates.

So, whoever said change is not good obviously doesn't know what they are talking about.

Because with change also comes more mobile data.

Years after squeezing consumers dry and barely a week after the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced on Dec. 14 that TPG Telecom is going to be the fourth telco in Singapore, Singtel is rolling out the goodies to lock down existing paying customers.

Some existing Singtel mobile subscribers would have already received an SMS informing them about the current offer extended to them to double or triple mobile data by 2GB or 4GB for a small top-up fee.

This upsizing of data was previously applicable since March 2016 for new and re-contract postpaid mobile plan customers only, which was rolled out in response to MyRepublic's then intention to spoil market by offering data-only plans from S$8 per month if it ever became the fourth telco. (Sadly, it couldn't.)

4th telco to snare 5 percent market share

Analysts are predicting that by 2021, TPG Telecom would have captured 5 percent of mobile revenue share in Singapore as the newest entrant.

Singtel's place at pole position appears the most stable, as out of the three existing telcos, M1 is believed to be the one that will be most affected though.

This is so as 80 percent of their revenue is derived from the mobile telecom segment and they do not have a pay-TV product to peg to its mobile business.

Price-sensitive customers who are M1 subscribers are more inclined to switch telcos as a result.

But this obviously hasn't stop Singtel from reacting to the fourth telco news.

So, should existing Singtel subscribers sign up for the double or triple mobile data?

It depends on how feeble your will is.

If Singtel subscribers wait it out a little longer, better deals will be rolled out soon because it is certifiably against basic human rights that mobile data is capped at 2GB a month.

The masses shall prevail.
