Bigo Live streaming app from S'pore is a voyeur's wet dream come true

Hide your daughters.

A Singapore-made live streaming app known as Bigo Live has been making underground waves among the youths of Singapore for a while now -- and not necessarily in a good way.

Launched only in March 2016 and available on iOS and Android, it’s not much different from live-streaming apps like Periscope.

The app allows users to broadcast their every move to an audience, who then participate by commenting and sending gifts that can be converted to real-life money.

A good number of streamers, however, appear to be young girls who have no qualms about revealing themselves -- even physically -- online.

Besides the mundane streams where users are seen eating or watching their computer screens and appear to be not doing much, some of the other streams are inclined towards the profane and indecorous, usually aided by encouragement, whether written or monetary.

This particular racy real-time dimension appears to be the app's unique selling point.

The appeal for viewers is a combination of boredom and curiosity, followed by borderline voyeurism.

On the other hand, streamers may have multiple motives, ranging from financial gain to instant fame, validation and attention, all of which they receive plenty of on the app.

Remarks with racial and sexual overtones are common, but they only aid in making the app more popular.

Responses to these online hijinks are telling of the app's targeted demographic:
