For Singaporeans looking for souvenirs for friends in Japan, skip your visit to the shops at Changi Airport and head on down to a glitzy neighbourhood in Japan instead.

Bee Cheng Hiang launched its first outlet in Ginza last Friday (September 23), after 20 years of rounds of business negotiations and ensuring the outlet's adherence to strict safety guidelines.

The bak kwa sold there is made from processed meat flown from Singapore in order to ensure consistency in quality.

Here are some pics of the packaged bak kwa selling in-store:

Reception has been warm from Singaporeans abroad, as well as local Japanese:

"It was super delicious! It reminded me of the times where I lived in Singapore, it brought me so much nostalgia!"

Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State at the Ministries of Trade and Industry as well as Culture, Community and Youth, paid a visit to the store and was full of praise:

Here's what she said in her post:

Took the opportunity to drop by at the very first store of Bee Cheng Hiang Japan! Group GM Mr Daniel Wong showed us new packaging developed specifically for theJapanese market but containing authentic bak kwa from Singapore, freshly barbecued in Tokyo. IE Singapore worked with Bee Cheng Hiang for many years on obtaining the necessary approvals for processed pork from Singapore to be exported to Japan, among other things. Very glad to see another well-known Singapore brand enter the Japanese market! #mtisg

The only catch - it's almost twice as expensive.

480g of Bakkwa retails at 4000yen, which translates roughly to $54 Singapore dollars; it costs $33 dollars for the same thing here.

Here's the store's address:

東京都中央区銀座5-6-9

5-6-9, Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
