Vietnamese boy with rare condition racing against time, seeking donations for bone marrow transplant

The boy's condition, which inflicts him with multiple infections simultaneously, affects one in a million babies.

This is Khang.

He will be two years old in four months' time.

He's also had a high fever for the past four months. After not being able to figure out what was wrong, his parents flew him to Singapore from Vietnam to seek medical treatment.

Instead of learning the names of different types of plants, animals or vehicles like other almost-two-year-olds, Khang, now warded at the National University Hospital, knows words like "temperature" and "medicine" and phrases like "put IV" and "injection machine".

Diagnosed with a disease called HyperIgM syndrome, a condition that greatly impairs his immune system, leading him to suffer from multiple infections, the young boy's only hope is a specialised bone marrow transplant.

However, given the nature of the operation, the medical bill will come up to as much as S$200,000.

Only a few countries can perform the procedure, including Singapore; over the past 20 years in Singapore's medical history, only nine such cases were ever treated.

His mother took to crowdfunding website GIVEasia to raise funds for Khang's transplant, and has already raised more than $83,000 from almost 400 donors.

The trouble is, Khang is racing against time to raise the money — and he doesn't have much of that (time).

His condition is worsening and according to his parents, the hospital will not commence the operation until the full amount can be raised — likely because they are foreigners:

A Facebook page set up by a supporter posted an update on Wednesday afternoon calling more urgently for donations so they can begin the transplant procedure.

Here's one of the recent things his mother shared about him:

Let's hope this big-hearted boy gets the treatment he needs.
