No, a Singaporean did not get eaten by an alligator in Florida

Share it and look stupid. At your own risk.

You might have seen an article making the rounds on social media about a 23-year-old Singaporean woman slain by an alligator after trying to take a selfie with it.

Fortunately (or unfortunately if you are a believer in natural selection), this story by the Florida Sun Post is most likely a hoax.

In case you're the type of Singaporean who shares things without actually verifying them (READ: Five Nights in Pyongyang), there are actually various clues that that the article is faking it.

For instance, if you google "Florida Sun Post", you'll see that the site has been busted for running fake news stories before.

Here are some of the Google results:

There's also the fact that the article quotes absolutely nobody. And that Florida Sun Post is the only news outlet reporting it with no other outlet carrying the story in this info-rich, highly-globalised world.

Despite that, some Singaporeans could not help sharing the article.

One of them included the Singapore Democratic Party's furry mascot, Danny the Democracy Bear. Maybe he was being funny, maybe he is not, his post alone garnered some 150 shares.

And of course, there were people who took the opportunity to be nasty/funny/introspective etc.

So yeah, your cool/cynical/wistful Facebook status was based on a fake story.

Move on, internet, nothing to see here.
