Ever since assuming appointment in May this year, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been a controversial figure to watch.

Known best for launching his nationwide drug war which has been touted by observers around the world as brutal and ruthless, Duterte's hard-handed methods to crack down on drugs has inspired not only fear and ire, but also some degree of respect from his citizens and the international community.

And it seems that some Philippine students hold their president in high regard -- to the extent of creating a Japanese style animation in honour of him.

Made by the Davao Nikkei Jin Anime Club in cooperation with Bisayaball, a Facebook community, the animated video has garnered more than 39,484 shares and 18,000 likes since it was posted on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Whether or not you appreciate Duterte's allegedly foul-mouthed ways or over-the-top antics, this seemingly new approach of creating a political cult of personality is something anime fans would be obliged to agree is a pretty fine piece of work right there.

For all we know, we might see animated, chibi versions of Singapore's candidates at next year's Presidential Elections too.
