These fans skipped work/school to catch a glimpse of a Singapore Olympian

No need to work when there's a gold medalist in town.

Seems like Singapore still cannot get enough of golden boy Joseph Schooling. The 100m Butterfly Olympic gold medalist was on a victory parade through town on August 18 for the viewing pleasure of Schooling fans everywhere.

Mothership went down to Raffles City Atrium (the 3rd pit stop) to speak with some of his biggest fans.

Phoebe, 18, is working part time with Team SG. Schooling showed that anyone can achieve their dreams if they put their mind to it. He inspires her to persevere and work harder to reach her goals.

Phoebe: "Watching him really showed Singaporeans that even though we're from a small country, we can still achieve big things....and anyone can do it if they put their mind to it. Personally, I feel like working even harder now, and have more perseverance and try to accomplish my dreams."

Estelle and Chloe, both 18, were here queueing since 11am. They wished they were at the airport (on 15th August) to welcome Schooling but they 'don't do mornings' and could only follow the updates online.

Estelle: "I feel like, him being the first Singaporean to win a gold medal - it really puts things into perspective. It makes me feel that dreams are attainable. It doesn't feel impossible anymore, of course with hard work lah."

Chloe: "I read up about him, when I found out he won [the gold medal for 100m butterfly]. I realised he put in a lot more hard work than we think he did. You never really think about how much he sacrificed for his country. He even had to fly overseas at a really young age just to y'know pursue his dream, and to do it for his nation - I felt really inspired by that. You can't really achieve success when you don't sacrifice for a bigger purpose than yourself."

Faizal, 31, has been following Schooling since the SEA games.

Faizal: "I was at Marine Terrace (the first pit stop) at 9am! I wanted to meet Schooling at the beginning (of the Victory Parade) and the end. I like his swimming. I knew from the beginning that he would definitely win at the Olympics. He has the confidence and the skills!"

Dee, 18 and Siti, 31 were also at Marine Terrace in the morning. However, seeing as Schooling was so swamped with people there, they decided to come to Raffles City instead to catch the swimming legend.

Siti: "Schooling is an inspiration to the young people in Singapore, especially the athletes - they finally have someone local to look up to, instead of like Michael Phelps. We should be very proud of him. How many of us can actually say that we met our idol and matched up to him? I feel very proud of him."

Dee: "If you can beat Michael Phelps, nothing is impossible!"

Ethan Van Huizen, 17 thinks Schooling is a great inspiration to aspiring athletes.

Ethan: "He really put Singapore on the map, made us globally known, and we can compete with bigger countries like the United States. Actually my whole family is quite big on swimming. We all watched him from the SEA Games all the way to the Olympic finals. We're really big supporters of Joseph Schooling."

Kudos to these dedicated Schooling fans. If spending your weekday afternoon stuck in a queue with strangers isn't dedication, we don't know what is.
