S'pore photographers style everyday Singaporean items as couture

Who knew how fashion-forward the humble Good Morning towel could be?

This year's National Day has inspired some fascinating — and surprisingly elegant — creativity in the realm of hyper-local fashion from two local photographers.

And by hyper-local fashion, we mean outfits made from...

- chilli padi with black sauce packets,

- dabao (takeaway) paper packets and rubber bands (styrofoam boxes too),

- parking coupons, and

- Good Morning towels.

Take local photographer Jayden Tan's short series, for instance, called "Char Bor":

If you're one to know these sorts of things, your instincts of them being inspired by Dutch photographer Hendrik Kerstens's portraits of his daughter:

As well as by this painting by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer:

Are right. Also because he mentioned these two sources as well. They're nonetheless fairly brilliant, in our view.

As are these outfits dreamt up by local photographer Ted Chen:

Which include this:

Now this one is sure to keep away the pickpockets:

A round of applause for these two gentlemen, and a belated salute to our 51-year-old nation.
