Shawn Ignatius Rodrigues, 26, was found dead at a staircase in Block 279, Yishun Street 22 on Saturday (July 9).
A 20-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the case. The Straits Times and MyPaper both carried comments from the suspect's 22-year-old sister who said that the victim had been "stalking" her brother for two years.
The police has released a statement providing more details of prior exchanges between Rodrigues, the suspect and the suspect's family.
The statement said that between April 2015 and March 2016, the suspect’s mother had lodged four police reports against Rodrigues - three for alleged nuisance caused by Rodrigues after he had turned up at the suspect’s house and been asked by the suspect’s family to leave, and the fourth report was classified by the police as a case of outrage of modesty. The fourth report was in the midst of investigations.
Prior to this statement, a Hardwarezone Forum user shared a screenshot of a Facebook update involving Rodrigues, with the post claiming that Rodrigues' actions have been escalated to Minister K Shanmugam the member of Parliament for the area:
The police's statement confirmed that an appeal was made through MP K Shanmugam and that the matter, specifically the outrage of modesty case, was under investigation by the police.
According to the police, Rodrigues had also lodged a police report on June 30 2015 alleging that he had been assaulted by the suspect on 23 June 2015. Rodrigues had indicated that he did not wish to pursue the matter further.
The police shared that they have been "following up on the reports lodged by the parties and have been engaging both sides." It said that the suspect's family had followed the police's advice to lodge a Magistrate Complaint against Rodrigues and both parties had also been attending Community Court mediation proceedings since February 2016, with the last session held in May.
The police also advised that "everyone should refrain from commenting or speculating about the case, and what may or may not have happened. Commenting, speculating on issues, which will have to be dealt with in Court proceedings, may be sub judice."
