At the recent China Beijing International High-Tech Expo, China unveiled a futuristic bus design called the transit elevated bus (TEB).
Here's what the purported bus of the future will look like.
And here it is in "action".
It acts almost as a moving overhead bridge that carries passengers to designated bus stops along the way.
The bus is expected to be around two traffic lanes wide and will travel on rails on the side of the road and "hover" above the cars underneath it.
Passengers can still board on street level from an elevator type platform that descends from the bus.
TEB is expected to easily clear vehicles under 2 meters tall.
The company behind the project, Transit Explore Bus, came up with the straddling bus concept in a bid to combat the issues of congestion in some of China's larger cities.
Song Youzhou, the chief engineer behind the project details the perks of the "hoverbus" as such.
"The biggest advantage is that the bus will save a lot of road space, it has the same function as the subway but it only cost 16 percent of the subway cost."
While it is still only in the conceptual phase of production, the end product is expected to hold 1,200 passengers and travel 60km/hour.
The potentially revolutionary mode of transport is expected to take around a year to finish, and construction is scheduled to start later this year in Hebei's Qinghuangdao city.
Here's a video from Autoblog showcasing the TEB.
Not sure if this technology will suit Singapore's needs especially with our overhead bridges, double decker buses, and traffic lights acting as potential things the TEB can ram into. But we can only dream.
