The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has lifted the ban on personal tablets and laptops in camps.

Now, servicemen are able to use these devices in green zones, which include bunks, medical centres, gyms and cookhouses.

Previously, such devices could be used only in business centres in selected camps.

According to a statement posted on the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) website on Sunday, March 27, the ban has been lifted since the beginning of March.

Another change to its rules include allowing smartphones that have their camera disabled to be used in zones marked red, which include unit operations rooms and offices with sensitive information.

Previously, servicemen were only allowed to enter the no-camera phone red zones after they deposited their phones in lockers, as camera-equipped phones were allowed to be used only in the less sensitive green zones.

The use of personal tablets and laptops in camps should be a welcomed change for national servicemen who attend their annual in-camp training.

Previously, they were mostly hampered as they could not attend to work as laptop and tablet use was restricted.

The SAF divided camps into green and red zones in 2012, allowing personnel to use camera phones in the non-sensitive green zones.
