When interviewed by Wanbao this morning, Xie didn't deny secularisation and told the paper: "This is my business."

Xie, 54, quit showbiz in October 2005, where he spent 11 years and picked up five Best Actor awards.

He moved back to Johor Baru and opened an animal shelter and also was a chef at a vegetarian restaurant.

He later became a monk in September 2013 at a monastery in Pontian, Johor Baru and led a low-profile life, often shunning the media spotlight.

This was after news of his ordainment in 2013 in a Buddhist centre in Pontian caused an uproar.
