MediaCorp's televised countdown party's lack of diversity irks viewers

Excessive use of Mandarin and reliance on Channel 8 artists are main gripes.

Some viewers of MediaCorp's 2013 countdown party that was televised on free-to-air Channel 5 and 8, weren't too happy with how things went down.

Their main gripes?

Apparently, there was an over reliance on Channel 8's Mandarin-speaking artists, which skewed the programme to cater to a certain demographic.

And the countdown party was marred by MediaCorp's 50th anniversary celebration -- two events that don't really have a connection.

Not that there aren't any merit in these complaints.

Channel 5 and Channel 8 used to show different countdown parties because they catered to different audiences, but this time, they televised the same event.

Plus, the promotional poster showed that the whole countdown party is perhaps playing second fiddle to The Wanted and Wang Leehom:

And here are some of the feedback from forums by displeased viewers:

Ivan Heng gave MediaCorp a piece of his mind as well:

One guy, an ex-MediaCorp employee, wrote on his blog:

"In fact, it showed a lack of cultural sensitivity of the leadership of whoever was in charge and whoever was involved in the planning and conceptualization of the countdown itself. Perhaps, this was the intended direction of the leadership – to move Singapore towards a more China-based or Chinese-speaking audience. Yes? No?"

And MediaCorp's Facebook page has been taking a bit of feedback:

But other than that one can guess it went okay.
