14 Singaporean New Year's Resolutions you can achieve

Because losing weight is an impossible resolution

Keeping to New Year's resolutions are usually harder than A Levels F Maths questions. That's why we have 14 uniquely Singaporean resolutions which you can achieve and make the world a better place.

1. Give up MRT seats to pregnant ladies even if it means mistaking a plump lady for a pregnant one.

not sure if fat or pregnant

Don't be afraid if they are not pregnant, you may actually spur them to switch to a healthier lifestyle after that accidental humiliation.

2. Improve your timing when dashing across the MRT platform to change trains.

That way we can have higher train frequencies! Or also train our IPPT shuttle run.

3. Buy tissue from the old aunties at hawker centres or at least turn them down nicely.

noooo

Be nice ok? If not how to find tissue paper to chope seats?

4. Buy drinks/snacks from the mama shop or minimart rather than 24-hour convenience stores to support our local aunty and uncles.

The shopkeepers are most of the time very grumpy. But they will always have that ice cold drinks you crave after an afternoon of basketball or street soccer. And where else can you find awesome Hiro cakes?!

5. Hold the lift door open so you’ll share a lift with someone from your block.

You there. The one who's been spamming the door close button every time you see someone approaching the lift. Stahp! It is at most a 30-second ride. A friendly smile and nod of acknowledgement diffuses any awkwardness... until they start talking.

6. Say hello or thank you to your bus driver.

hello bus driver

You say hello to the baristas, you say thank you to the cashiers. So why can't you do the same for bus drivers? Do it!

7. Visit one of the free-to-enter museums and donate to our culture.

11 Museums in Singapore, including the the National Museum, Singapore Art Museum, Asian Civilizations Museum, have been free for entry to the public since May this year. Go and get yourself cultured and donate some money. Culture is not free.

8. Share an umbrella.

umbrella

Sharing is caring. If your umbrella is big enough, why don't you help the poor chap who wants to go home as badly as you do after a crappy day's work?

9. Don’t speed up when a driver is trying to switch into your lane.

If you do, you're just a few steps away from becoming this 'wreckless' driver.

10. Eat at least 10 different kinds of hawker food you’ve not tried before.

funny eating

Time to move away from the mainstream like Chicken Rice, Mee Goreng, or Prata. Try Sup Tulang, Ah Balling, Kueh Pie Tee and Frog-leg porridge.

11. Don’t go online to complain about the Government. That often.

complain

Be a real Singaporean - not everything bad that happens to you is the Government's fault. Chill.

12. Catch the ghost at the end of the bus.

back of the bus

There's always empty spaces at the back of crowded buses. Time for some brave souls to go catch the resident ghosts there.

13. Watch local movies in the cinema, not YouTube.

You wouldn't steal a car, you wouldn't steal a handbag, you wouldn't steal a television... So don't try to watch local movies that was uploaded onto YouTube. If you try hard enough you can find them. But just don't. I mean the videos are still there for you to watch. But no. Don't. Even award-winning director Anthony Chen is down to $250 of savings in his bank account.

14. Save a journalist, buy newspapers.

newspaper sinking

Newspaper readership is going down. Amidst spending time watching YouTube, catching updates on Twitter, hashtagging photos on Instagram, stalking your friends on Facebook, and reading Mothership, we should use some of that loose change in our pockets to buy the papers once in a while. Shouldn't we? Hmm?

Need party game ideas for your NYE countdown? We've got 8 awesome ones which all involve alcohol.
