Over the Chinese New Year (CNY) period, a Singaporean man was seen arguing with staff at the Mid Valley Southkey mall in Johor Bahru after he was alleged to have broken a display shelf by sitting on it.

As they pressured him to provide compensation, he refused and said he could sue the staff for the alleged injury caused by the shelf.

The video

The aftermath of the incident was captured in a Facebook video shared on Feb. 13.

In the video, a man wearing a grey T-shirt and sunglasses was walking through the mall with his family as a mall staff approached him.

The staff confronted the man as he continued walking away. They claimed that he broke their display shelf after he allegedly sat on it.

"I know the law," he said in Mandarin to the staff, arguing that their shelf was actually defective and had, in fact, caused him an injury.

"Don't run!" said the staff as he continued to walk away. "Since you claimed that you're not in the wrong, why are you running?"

"We have video (evidence)!" said the staff.

They eventually brought him back to the shop. There, according to the footage on Facebook, a red display shelf holding festive CNY items had buckled.

The staff insisted that the man pay for the display items which were damaged when they fell with the shelf.

However, the man asserted that only the paper wrapping for the display shelf in question was damaged, and refused to pay up for anything else.

He also claimed his waist that had been injured in the incident.

"If you insist I have to pay, I can say that I was injured...But at this point I'm not suing you for the injury," he said.

At one point, the man tried to walk away from the scene but a staff member grabbed his backpack.

The man also claimed that the display shelves looked like seats and insisted that signs should have been put up to inform shoppers that they could not sit there.

In response, one of the staff members said that since the shelves were used to display merchandise, shoppers should have known not to sit on them.

"Use your brain! You are talking nonsense!" a staff member told him.

When Mothership reached out to Mid Valley Southkey, the mall confirmed that they were aware of the incident, and were investigating the matter.

Other S'poreans who ruffled feathers in M'sia during CNY

During the Chinese New Year long weekend, many Singaporeans flocked to Malaysia, with notably long queues forming at Woodlands Checkpoint on the first day of CNY.

Some locals, however, made the news for ruffling feathers when they were up north.

This included a Singaporean driver who was arrested after he smashed a car window with a golf club, and another driver who cut into a highway emergency lane and caused an accident with a motorcycle.
