The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is investigating after a woman spotted insects crawling on a brush used for washing woks at Wok Hey located in Compass One.

A video of the incident on Monday morning April 17 was shared with Stomp.

The take-out food kiosk was not opened yet at that time.

At least three insects were seen moving on one of the brushes used to clean the wok after each round of cooking.

SFA told The Straits Times that the matter is being investigated and enforcement action could be taken against errant food handlers.

Wok Hey told ST its internal investigations found that the cleaning contractors it engaged did not clean the brushes properly.

The "professional cleaning company" is tasked with cleaning and sanitising the outlets after operating hours on a daily basis, Wok Hey added.

To reassure consumers, the food chain also said additional checks and another round of cleaning of kitchen utensils, including the brushes, are conducted before operations start.

Update

Wok Hey said in a separate April 21 statement to the media that the incident took place at 7:15am.

Wok Hey staff "follow a stringent standard operating procedure when it comes to cleaning processes" at all outlets, and a professional cleaning company is engaged to deep clean and sanitise all outlets after operating hours on a daily basis, the statement added.

"Additionally, we engage pest control services to service all outlets monthly to ensure our outlets remain pest-free," the statement also said.

"As part of standard operating procedure, all our cooking apparatus undergo a cleaning process prior to daily food preparation."

"In this instance, the post-closure cleaning standard for the wok brushes to be done the night prior was not followed, and we apologise for that."

"We are working closely with all staff and contractors to ensure that we maintain the highest hygiene standards."
