Fire breaks out at Tampines HDB unit, 5 including toddler conveyed to hospital

Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was of electrical origin.

A fire broke out in a Tampines HDB unit on the morning of Apr. 16, 2023.

In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that they were alerted to a fire at block 645B Tampines Street 62.

The fire involved the contents of a bedroom in a unit on the 13th floor.

The blaze was extinguished using a hose reel.

Five conveyed to hospital

A total of five people evacuated the affected and neighbouring units prior to SCDF's arrival.

Four persons were conveyed to Singapore General Hospital and one person was sent to KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

According to a report by Shin Min Daily News, the resident of the affected unit and her two-year-old daughter were sleeping in the master bedroom when the fire happened.

Meanwhile, her 22-year-old son was sleeping in another room.

Fire of electrical origin

Preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire indicates that it was of electrical origin.

SCDF would like to remind the public on some good practices to adopt in the household to prevent electrical fires from occurring:

a) Never overload electrical outlets with electrical appliances;

b) Always switch off appliances when not in use;

c) Check the condition of wires regularly. Frayed wires or cracked cords should be replaced or repaired immediately;

d) Do not run wires under carpets or mats and keep wires away from hot surfaces;

e) Use appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark. The categories of appliances can be found at http://www.consumerproductsafety.gov.sg ;

f) Do not leave batteries or devices to charge unattended for an extended period of time or overnight.
