Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and co. are coming back.

Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination and also boss of DreamWorks, said the process in getting the original gang back together has started.

"We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return," he said.

Meladandri wants to give audiences what they want.

He explained: "It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ["The Super Mario Bros Movie"], where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honour those core elements."

"And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that."

Eddie Murphy, who voiced Donkey, had expressed enthusiasm at reprising his voice role.

He said he would play Donkey again "in two seconds", and also called for a spin-off for the loudmouth animal sidekick.

"You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, 'They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey'," he said earlier in 2023.

Other original cast members include Mike Myers, who voiced Shrek, and Cameron Diaz, who voiced Princess Fiona.

Meledandri is now preparing to launch Mario onto movie screens.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is expected to do well at the box office following its April 5 opening.
