A full-time SCDF national serviceman has disappeared at Pulau Ubin.
Search efforts are still ongoing
In response to queries from Mothership, SCDF said that it received a call for water rescue assistance at Kekek Quarry on Pulau Ubin at about 2:10am on Saturday (Apr. 15).
Upon SCDF's arrival, there was no sign of the man.
SCDF conducted search operations by deploying firefighters to conduct a visual search from the shore.
Rescuers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) also deployed an underwater remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) to aid the search effort.
The ROV allows underwater search operations to be conducted using sonar-imaging equipment that maps out underwater terrain. This reduces risks for the divers due to poor visibility underwater, SCDF explained.
Police officers were also deployed to assist in the search for the missing man.
Search efforts are still ongoing, said SCDF.
Missing man works at Tampines Fire Station
SCDF confirmed with Mothership that the missing man is a firefighter at Tampines Fire Station.
At the time of incident, he was off duty.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the missing man is 20 years old.
A Pulau Ubin resident Zaobao spoke to said friends of the missing man went to Ubin jetty to ask for help to search for the missing person at around 7pm on Friday (Apr. 14).
The resident said that the missing man had possibly gone for a swim in the quarry lake, and did not have his phone with him when he went missing.
As the area around the quarry lake is fenced up, the resident suspected that the man had gotten past the fence.
He added that the lake in Kekek Quarry can go as deep as 40 metres, and that it is home to pythons and crocodiles.
A trip from Ubin jetty to Kekek Quarry is around 3.7km long.
The area does not receive much human traffic, the resident said.
Friends and family of the missing man on Ubin declined to be interviewed, Zaobao reported.
SCDF told Mothership it is providing assistance and support to the man's family.
