2 M'sian cops visit Melaka, allegedly rob Indonesian tourist of passport, jewellery

Both men could be jailed for up to 25 years.

Two Malaysian policemen were charged with robbing an Indonesian tourist in Melaka on Apr. 13.

TS Praveen and Muhammad Safri Idris, both 31 year old lance corporals, are accused of robbing a 42 year old Indonesian woman at the Budget Hotel AMT Hotel Plaza Mahkota in Melaka, according a report in Bernama.

The incident took place on  on the night of Apr. 3, between 10 and 11.30pm.

Court documents said that the two policemen together robbed the woman of items amounting to about RM 1,800 (S$ 545), including her Indonesian passport, a bank ATM card, and a piece of jewelry.

They were also charged with illegally possessing the woman's passport.

The pair face up to 20 years in prison and caning if convicted of the robbery, with a possibility of an additional five years and RM 10,000 (S$ 3,025) fine for illegally possessing the victim's passport.

The deputy public prosecutor asked the Ayer Keroh Sessions court to set bail of RM15,000 (S$ 4,538), and requested that the two men be prevented from disturbing the victim before trial.

According to The Star, the two men's bail was set at RM 9,000 (S$ 2,723).

They're not even from here

The Star also quoted Melaka police officer Christopher Patit as saying that the two men were from two different police stations outside of the city of Melaka.

One served in Merlimau, south of Melaka, and the other served in Rembau police headquarters in the neighbouring state of Negri Sembilan. 

Both men claimed trial, denying that they had committed the robbery.
