When a man returned home one day to find his ex-girlfriend in his room with her new lover, he took out two knives and a pair of scissors, swung them at the lover and slashed his shin to chase him out of the house.

The 35-year-old man, Oo Than Naing, was arrested on the same day and was sentenced to three months in jail on Apr. 17, 2023, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

Broke up with ex-girlfriend a month ago

Court documents reveal that Oo, who comes from Myanmar, was in a relationship with a domestic helper named Mi, which ended in November 2021.

When they were dating, Mi’s employer allowed her to stay over on the weekends at Oo’s residence in a room at a Sengkang West apartment.

After they broke up, Mi started dating another man a month later.

Ex-girlfriend brings new lover to his room when he's not around

On Jan. 8, 2022, Mi brought her new boyfriend to Oo’s room in the afternoon when he was not around.

Oo returned home in the evening and confronted Mi, asking her what she was doing in his room with another man.

Mi claimed she and her new boyfriend were just “eating and talking”.

Knife in each hand

Oo retrieved a pair of scissors and two knives, each around 23cm to 31cm in length, from the kitchen and returned to the room, holding a knife in each hand.

He pointed the knives at the couple and threatened them to leave his house.

As they started quarrelling, Oo swung the knife in his right hand at Mi’s new boyfriend and slashed his shin.

Oo then released his knife and punched Mi’s new boyfriend in his face multiple times while kicking his leg.

Threw whisky bottle

He then grabbed a whisky bottle and threatened to throw it at the new boyfriend, who begged Oo to stop.

Oo smashed the bottle at the wall instead, and the new boyfriend ran out of the room.

As the new boyfriend attempted to open the metal gate to escape the flat, Oo caught up to him and punched him multiple times on the shoulder.

The new boyfriend eventually managed to leave and called the police.

He went to the hospital for medical treatment and spent S$128 on medical fees for lacerations on his shin and bruises all over his face.

Studying for master's degree while working

According to Shin Min Daily News, Oo’s lawyer told the court during his mitigation plea that Oo was working while studying for his master's degree.

He said Oo was exhausted from a day of work and returned home to find his ex-girlfriend and a man drinking in his room.

Oo had to use his computer for a study discussion, so he chased the duo out of his room, but his ex-girlfriend refused to leave.

Oo was enraged and only wanted to scare them away with the knives but ended up hurting the victim.

Dreams to stay in S'pore dashed

The lawyer said Oo regretted his actions and pleaded to the judge for leniency.

He explained that even though Oo has completed his studies, his dreams are dashed as he cannot stay in Singapore to work anymore after this episode.

Shin Min reported that the district judge accepted that the accused might have been angered, but added that he should not have continuously hurt the victim.
