A 57-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a robbery.

He attempted to flee after taking the victim's phone and wallet.

However, the alleged robber was unable to escape and was detained by the victim, his family, and members of the public.

The police said the incident took place on Apr. 17, 2023.

They were alerted to a case of robbery along Bukit Panjang Ring Road.

A 57-year-old man allegedly assaulted and robbed a 69-year-old man.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the victim named Chua, entered the elevator and saw a man standing inside facing away from him.

Chua said he was heading out to visit the hardware store at that time.

As Chua went to press the button in the lift, the man suddenly turned around and threw his fist at Chua's face from the side, Shin Min reported.

The man then tried to snatch Chua's phone from his shirt pocket.

"When I snatched my phone back to put it back in my back, I did not think he would punch me again, trying to take my wallet," Chua told Shin Min.

The robber allegedly took the victim's wallet and handphone and wanted to flee.

However, Chua managed to grab the man and force him out of the elevator and into the corridor.

Chua then yelled for his son, who was at home at the time, to help him, Shin Min reported.

Chua's son came to his assistance, and one of them pinned the robber's hands while the other pinned down his legs.

"Afterwards, we tied him down with raffia strings to prevent him from running away", Chua shared.

One of Chua's neighbours heard the altercation, Shin Min reported.

The neighbour then reported the incident to the police and helped Chua by providing the strings to help detain the robber.

Chua shared that he was enraged when the man hit him in the face, Shin Min reported.

Chua walked away from the altercation with his shirt torn, a cut on the upper lip and a swollen spot on his chest, but no serious injuries, Shin Min reported.

The 57-year-old man was subsequently arrested by the police on the same day.

Chua told Shin Min that he could recognise the man who attempted to rob him as a resident of the estate but was unfamiliar with him.

Second case

According to the police, this incident was the second incident in two days that involved voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery.

A 27-year-old man was arrested after they were alerted to a robbery case on Apr. 16, 2023.

A 35-year-old female victim was allegedly assaulted and robbed by an unknown man along Boon Lay Drive.

The robber then took from the victim S$260 in cash before he fled.

Officers from Jurong Police Division identified the 27-year-old robber through ground enquiries and the aid of images from closed-circuit television footage.

The robber was arrested on Apr. 17, 2023.

The victim's money was recovered upon the man's arrest.

Both men are to be charged in court on Apr. 19, 2023, with voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery, the Singapore Police Force press release announced.

The offence carries an imprisonment term of five to 20 years and no less than 12 strokes of the cane.
