A 47-year-old man was sentenced to 12.5 years in jail and 13 strokes of the cane for preying on four girls, aged between 13 and 17, through Instagram and sexually violating three of them at his home.

Davis Khor Khai Gin, a senior aircraft engineer, who committed the offences between August 2020 and February 2021, lured the victims with promises of cash or jobs.

A gag order is in place on the identity of the victims, identified only as V1, V2, V3 and V4 in court documents.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual penetration of a minor, one charge of attempted statutory rape and another charge of sexual grooming of a minor.

Six other charges were taken into consideration.

Background information

First victim

Since sometime in 2020, Khor would randomly message girls on Instagram and ask them whether they needed a part-time job or cash.

On Aug. 20, 2020, Khor messaged V1, who was 13 then, on Instagram.

He introduced himself under an alias and asked her whether she needed cash.

V1, who had just run away from a welfare home for teenage girls with behavioural problems, said she needed cash.

Khor offered her S$200 to let him touch her body, and V1 agreed.

The next day, Khor booked a Grab ride to pick V1 up and send her to his residence.

When V1 entered the flat, she saw an iPad and four S$50 notes on a table. V1 noticed that the iPad was recording.

Khor then started kissing V1 on the lips and touched her breast.

Khor then took off V1's clothes and violated her with a sex toy while the iPad recorded these acts.

He then led V1 into a room with a mattress and lay her down.

She told Khor she was 13, but he continued to violate her before asking whether he could have sex with her.

After V1 agreed, Khor tried to have sex with V1 but gave up as he could not perform.

Khor then passed V1 the four S$50 notes and told her not to tell anyone about their encounter. He also told her to delete her Instagram chat history.

He then booked her a Grab ride home.

Khor continued to message V1 on Instagram, offering her money in exchange for touching her body again.

As V1 needed money, she accepted his offer sometime later.

Similar to the first time, she went to Khor's house, and Khor performed sexual acts on her in exchange for S$200.

Second victim

Khor used a similar method to prey on V2.

He randomly messaged V2, introduced himself as "William", and asked if she needed cash.

When she said she needed money, he asked V2 for her age. She said she was 15.

Khor offered her a S$200 job, which he said involved cuddling and being his companion for two hours.

V2 eventually agreed to his offer after he persistently asked her. On Sep. 28, 2020, Khor booked V2 a Grab ride to his residence.

He violated her with a sex toy while recording the acts.

Khor tried to have sex with her, but she told him to stop.

He offered V2 half the promised amount, saying their session was incomplete.

V2 took the money and left the flat.

Third victim

V3 was only 14 years old.

On December 2020, Khor randomly messaged her and pretended to offer several part-time job options, including waitressing and working as a kitchen helper.

He informed V3 that the highest paying job was an "indecent one" involving himself touching V3's body for S$200.

Khor persistently messaged V3 to accept the "indecent job", despite her being uncomfortable with performing sexual acts and only interested in the waitressing job.

She voiced her concern that the "indecent job" did not feel right as she was only a teenager.

He replied that "age is not a consideration".

After days of pestering, V3 eventually relented and agreed to meet Khor on Jan. 5, 2021.

Upon arriving at Khor's residence, V3 saw four pieces of S$50 notes and three pieces of S$10 notes on the table.

Khor told V3 that if she stayed two hours, S$200 would be hers.

Khor then put his arm around V3's waist.

V3 said, "you are touching me" to Khor, and he released her.

He tried to persuade V3 to stay, but V3 insisted on leaving.

Khor then gave her S$30, and she left.

"Abhorrent sexual predator"

The prosecution called Khor a "sexual predator" whose conduct was "simply abhorrent".

"Reprehensibly, he pressured these victims to come to his residence with the lure of money, knowing they may be in desperate financial circumstances, so that he could satisfy his own sexual cravings," the prosecution wrote in their written submissions.

They asked for a sentence substantial enough to give effect to the principles of deterrence and retribution.

The prosecution emphasised: "There is no place in society for such only sexual predators who exploit the vulnerability of minors."
