According to Shin Min Daily News, the elderly man had been lying on the stage at the side of the square in the evening, as was his habit.
However, a female passerby sensed something amiss, because he had been lying motionless for a long time.
She observed him for some time and realised that he was not breathing, so she called the police at around 6pm.
The police subsequently cordoned off the scene and took away the deceased's body at around 8pm, reported Shin Min.
Homeless uncle often spent the night there
A member of the public told Shin Min that the homeless man was nice, and had shared cigarettes with him before.
The elderly man previously shared with him that he had left his home because of a strained relationship with his family.
Huang Mingshan, 60, a hawker, told Shin Min that he had seen the man wandering the area since a few months ago.
Huang said he would carry a dark-coloured backpack, and had a habit of resting on the stage at the square, often spending the night there.
Alternatively, when it rained, he would take shelter at a nearby HDB void deck.
Uncle changed his clothes daily, was a regular at the hawker centre
Huang told Shin Min that the man was quite conscious of his cleanliness despite being homeless.
He heard that the man would often take showers in the nearby hawker centre, and changed his clothes daily.
The man also had enough money on him to eat three meals a day at the hawker centre. As such, the staff there easily recognised him.
Another stall owner described him as a quiet man who would regularly drop by to order teh tarik, roti prata or nasi goreng.
Police statement
The police confirmed with Mothership that they were alerted to a case of unnatural death at Block 160 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on Apr. 11 at about 6pm.
The man was found lying motionless and was pronounced dead at scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedic.
Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.
Police investigations are ongoing.
