However, things took a messy turn when a crowd of shoppers turned rowdy at a Malaysian store offering a huge promotion deal.

The incident took place on Apr. 1 at Starvilion, a clothing store located at Shah Alam, Selangor in Malaysia.

According to videos that surfaced on TikTok and Twitter, the store was holding a promotional sale which offered clothes for as low as RM1 (S$0.30) for the first 100 customers.

This led to many shoppers rushing into the store, jostling one another and flinging items around.

There was even some fighting among the people.

Netizens slammed store & shoppers

The chaos at the store sparked discussion among netizens.

Some criticised the store for the lack of crowd control and marketing tactics without the proper preparation, while others slammed the shoppers for being uncivilised.

Some netizens even compared the incident to the Itaewon crowd crush that occurred in South Korea, noting that the shoppers' safety could be at risk.

Police called in

Officers from Malaysia’s People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) were also seen trying to maintain order.

One of them was even said to be injured and was taken away by a fellow officer, New Straits Times (NST) reported.

Starvilion was ordered to cease its operations for the day by district police after they received a complaint at around 10:30am, according to a later report by NST.

Shah Alam police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said that more than 500 people descended on the store and were “pushing, shoving and causing public disorder”.

He advised the public against being "too emotional" over promotions during the festive season and reminded business owners to be considerate in order to prevent similar future incidents, Astro Awani reported.
