A school bus that was ferrying students home lost a part of its engine, literally, on Apr. 12.

Shin Min Daily News (SMDN) reported that this "rare accident" occurred along Redhill Road near Redhill Food Centre.

According to a 60-year-old woman surnamed Lin (transliteration), who informed the news outlet about the accident, she saw a chunk of what looked like a piece of an engine drop out of a school bus when it passed her.

According to the photos she provided to SMDN, there were many metal parts strewn all over the road.

Around 20 students on the bus

She said there were around 20 schoolkids on the bus, and they had to be evacuated to a nearby footpath.

There were also four adults who join the children while they waited for alternative transportation.

When the SMDN reporter rushed to the scene, the police had already arrived to divert traffic, and a tow truck was getting ready to tow the bus away.

According to SMDN sources, the school bus had just departed from the nearby Gan Eng Seng school.

Bus driver never encountered such situation

The driver, who asked not to be named, told the reporter that he thought something was wrong when he heard a huge sound and immediately stopped his bus.

When he realised what was happening, he asked a nearby bus company for help and made arrangements for the students.

The driver said the bus belonged to him, and it was the first time he had ever encountered such a situation.

Bus just came out of workshop

He also claimed that the bus had just come out of the workshop that morning (Apr. 12), as he had asked for its rear area checked out, and the workshop did change several parts.

The driver said he was considering if he would to scrap the bus or buy a new one, as the bus was about 12 years old.

“I’ll have to rent one in the meantime,” he added.

Expert never seen engine dropped out of bus in 40 years of his career

SMDN identified the chunk of the engine as its gearbox and asked several workshops for their opinion.

An expert who claimed to have 40 years of experience repairing vehicles said he had never seen an engine or gearbox dropped out of a bus while on the road in his whole career.

“Regardless, if the engine’s support was loose, the driver should have heard it once it started shaking or knocking the walls,” he explained.
