A family living in Khatib found themselves housing a new member after a feathered friend flew into their home.

Unexpected guest

On Apr. 11, one of the residents, Jerry, posted a picture of the bird on the r/Singapore subreddit.

The bird was identified as a cinnamon conure. Also known as a green-cheeked parakeet, the species is known to be clownish and shy.

Jerry said that the "affectionate and cuddly” bird had taken a liking to his family.

He wrote that the bird was tagged with a serial number, meaning it was likely someone's lost pet.

While waiting for its owner to surface, Jerry took it upon himself to make his temporary housemate more comfortable, such as constructing a cage from two wire mesh drawers.

The bird even had a hanger to perch on.

Jerry also asked for help in caring for the bird: "Any tips and tricks please let me know. It's currently in a makeshift cage safely with a bowl of water."

Experienced bird owners rallied on Reddit to offer advice on the bird's diet, preferences and mannerisms, so much so that the involuntary birdkeeper quickly became an expert in all things cinnamon conure.

Some provided insights into the interior design of the cage, saying that a "thick branch or wooden stick" would be ideal for the bird to perch on.

They also said having a cloth or towel to cover the cage would help the bird sleep better.

Others cautioned Jerry on what not to do, telling him to avoid overfeeding and ensure it had variety in its diet.

According to Jerry, one person even donated a cage and pellets.

"That really kind gesture was very heart-warming and opened us to a whole community of bird lovers in Singapore."

Jerry's family has reached out to some Telegram groups but have yet to find any leads.
