Girl, 2, dies after van reverses into her at Woodlands car park, father, 33, arrested

A two-year-old girl died after a van allegedly driven by her father reversed into her at an HDB estate car park in Woodlands on March 13.

The girl was conveyed unconscious to the hospital, where she subsequently passed away, the Singapore Police Force told Mothership.

Her four-year-old brother and her 34-year-old mother were conveyed conscious to the hospital.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested for careless driving causing death, according to Lianhe Zaobao.

Police investigations are ongoing.

What happened

According to Zaobao, the tragedy took place at around 2:45pm at the open-air car park in front of Block 326 Woodlands Street 32.

Residents at the scene told Zaobao that prior to the incident, the family of four was seen dining at the coffee shop on the ground floor of the HDB block.

The father was believed to have left the coffee shop first to drive the van.

At that time, just as the father was reversing his vehicle out of the parking lot, the mother was pushing the stroller while walking with her son towards the car park when the stroller slid out of the driveway, Zaobao reported residents as saying.

However, the girl allegedly slipped off and fell out of the stroller and onto the road.

She was then run over by the van driven by her father, according to Zaobao.

According to footage seen by Zaobao, which was provided by residents of the estate, the father could be seen holding his daughter in his arms and appeared to be distressed.

His wife and son were also captured sitting still on the side.

Members of the public offered help

According to a photo uploaded to the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page, which captured the scene after the incident, many members of the public were seen holding umbrellas for the injured.

At the end of the video, a few parking lots were filmed being cordoned off, with the father's van parked to the side.

According to the caption of the post, foreign workers nearby also stepped forward to help the family after the incident and members of the public called the ambulance immediately.

Police investigations ongoing

In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force confirmed they were alerted to an accident involving a van and three pedestrians at at around 2:40pm.

A four-year-old boy and 34-year-old woman, who were pedestrians, were conveyed conscious to the hospital.

Another two-year-old female pedestrian was conveyed unconscious to the hospital, where she subsequently passed away.

A 33-year-old male driver was arrested for careless driving causing death.

Police investigations are ongoing.
