Some age-old traditions are still alive today in Singapore -- even though many of you might not have heard of it.

For example, to immerse newcomers in the school culture, many junior colleges organise activities for students to participate en masse and bond together, but these are usually held in school.

But did you know that Victoria Junior College (VJC) has an orientation tradition where they do a mass dance in public -- but take it to a whole other level?

Now you do.

Dancing around the Fountain of Wealth

A TikTok video posted on Feb. 9, 2023, showed students from VJC gathered around the Fountain of Wealth in Suntec City in a sea of yellow as part of their orientation camp.

According to one of the comments, this event is typically held on the last day of orientation.

In a follow-up video posted on Feb. 10, 2023, the students could be seen dancing and chanting in unison to a song.

Members of the public were able to stand by the side and watch proceedings.

According to a Mothership reader, the students are participating in one of VJC's mass school dances, and they are shouting, "Whiney whiney whiney whoo".

"Highlight of orientation"

One Mothership reader shared that this tradition has been going on for years and is one of the highlights of orientation.

She shared that it was a way to end orientation on a high, as everyone would dance together.

She remembered during her schooling days that, some of her schoolmates formed a random congo line and danced around.

"It was good fun," she shared.

Another Mothership reader said this was not unusual for VJC students, and that it has been occurring for as long as anyone could remember.

She recalled it being a part of her youth and how it did not feel embarrassing back then as it would be done together as a whole group.

Junior Colleges' mass dances

Mass dances are a common occurrence across all junior colleges in Singapore.

Here are some other mass dances from other JCs:
